BACKGROUND
CHAIRMAN INTRODUCTION
After 200 years of settlement, Australia is celebrating far more than its Bicentenary. Australia has reached maturity and is more confident about its independence than ever before. Our standard of living is one of the highest in the world and the majority of the population enjoy an optimistic outlook on life. Australia has a stable political environment; banking and finance is deregulated; the business community is extremely competitive and in the main successful; the manufacturing sector is making strong headway, while the mining and rural industries continue to reap the rewards our land has to offer. More than ever, Australian businessmen are looking beyond our own shores. The potential for Australian business to succeed on an international scale is extremely bright and concurrently, as a nation, we have never been more receptive to other countries investing in our future. The Essington Group is perfectly poised to take advantage of this situation. Since its establishment in 1960, we have grown consistently and steadily. Our interests are now diversified from property development, construction and tourism to manufacturing, the arts and strategic investments. Our major shareholders include the Bank of New Zealand, State Bank Nominees and Consolidated Press Holdings. We have also developed very strong overseas connections. With Australia's internal and overseas development and Essington's wide diversification, we are in a unique position to offer investors looking toward Australia a choice of prime opportunities.
